On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, the Athletic Department hosted its Winter Sports Night in The Wheatley School Auditorium. We honored and recognized the achievements, contributions and efforts of our Junior Varsity and Varsity student-athletes from the Winter Sports Season.
In addition to highlighting the wonderful team accomplishments from this Winter season, highlights of the season include:
- Girls Varsity Basketball made it to the Nassau County Class B/C semi-finals.
- Senior Joanna Signorile and Freshman Emma Bergsohn both competed in the NYSPHSAA Girls Gymnastics State Championship meet at Cold Spring Harbor. Joanna earned a medal by placing 6th on the bars. Emma gave her best effort but fell short of placing and enjoyed her experience as a freshman competing with the best gymnasts in the state. Section 8 placed 3rd overall as a team which is a great accomplishment as a county.
- 3-time Nassau County Champion Joe Contrastano finished 3rd in the 120 lb. weight class at the NYSPHSAA Wrestling State Championships held in Albany, NY. This is Joe’s best finish in his High School career. He is a three-time Nassau County Champion. Congratulations to Joe and we look forward to your senior year achievements.
- Junior Dean Sheinman earned second place in Nassau County Wrestling Championship 160 lbs.
- Freshman Julia Schriefer ran a personal record of 1:39.80 in the 600m race at the State Qualifiers meet. Her time earned Julia a spot on the intersectional relay at the NYS Championship meet at Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York!
- Senior Samantha Rothstein was recognized as a News12 Scholar-Athlete!
- Coach Terry Grace was named Nassau County Boys Fencing Coach of the Year!
- Upon his retirement, Coach Dan Walsh was recognized for his 44 years of service to the students in our district.
Thanks to all that attended! A huge “Thank You” to Michael Scaturro for hosting a wonderful Winter Sports Awards! Thank you as well to Mr. Scaturro for the write-up and the photos!
Our friends at Island Photography were present at last Friday’s Pep Rally celebrating our Winter Athletic Teams. You can enjoy their photos here!
This past Friday afternoon, we finished a busy week of activity with a Winter Pep Rally! Organized and run by the Wheatley Student Senate, the pep rally gave teams an opportunity to introduce themselves to the school. The festivities began with the singing of the national anthem by Shruti Goyal (signed by Charlotte Goldbaum) and continued with performances by the Dance Team and our Cheer Team. Our very own Wheatley Wildcat (ably performed by sophomore Sage Silber) helped get the crowd enthused! We even demonstrated a new activity based on the “Hungry Hungry Hippos” game!
The Wheatley Athletic Program is honored to recognize the accomplishments of Joseph Contrastano. Joe, a sophomore, is a three-year starter for the Carle Place/Wheatley wrestling team. He is a returning All-State wrestler (6th NYS Division 2), three-time All-County and two-time Nassau County Champion. Last month, Joe earned All-American Status through his efforts at the NHSCA High School Nationals meet in Virginia.
Joe helps to organize practices and takes care of pre-game practice and match responsibilities. As our most accomplished wrestler, Joe performs at the highest level on the mat and continually adds spirit and confidence, keeping the team motivated and enthused. He has been a major contributor and the source for keeping the Carle Place/Wheatley wrestling program viable. As the recipient of every wrestling recognition that The Wheatley School awards, Joe has excited the Nassau County and New York State wrestling enthusiasts for the past three years.
Joe’s outstanding accomplishments speaks of his unlimited talent and desire to be the best. Next season Joe will be entering his junior season as one of the top-ranked wrestlers in Nassau County and New York State. His focus and dedication to the sport of wrestling has allowed his talent to be sought after by many Division I wrestling programs. Joe has been a member of Vougar’s Honors Wrestling Club, one of the top clubs in the country. Joe is a true student of the sport and returns the help and instruction he has received from his coaches by mentoring the younger members of the club as a volunteer coach and supporter.
At this prestigious wrestling Club, Joe has competed nationally and has achieved All-American recognition. At the 2018 Nationals Joe finished with 8 wins and earned All-American status with a 7th place finish. This is a major accomplishment and a result of the hard work, commitment and perseverance Joe has endured over his wrestling career.

Chris Moretta finished 4th and Matt Teemsma finished 3rd.
Wheatley freshman Joe Contrastano won his first County Championship, Wheatley senior Shawn Mosca won his second County Championship and Carle Place junior John DeRidder won his second County Championship. These three outstanding wrestlers will be competing for a State Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25. Good luck to all three and Coaches Korman and Grimm!
