CARE Club Fashion Show Raises Funds for Sunrise Day Camp!

For many years now, our Cancer Awareness, Research and Education (CARE) Club has held an annual “Runway for a Cure” fashion show to support the Sunrise Day Camp, the country’s only dedicated full-time summer day camp for children. With a highlight being the head shaving of Christina Cambria, the donations were especially generous. This year’s event took place this past Friday to an enthusiastic crowd, eventually raising over $7,000 for the camp — with the total still increasing!

We are thankful to the CARE Club officers and the club’s advisors, Christina Cambria and Dawn Muscarnera. We are also thankful for the photos from our yearbook photographer, Island Photography!

CARE Club Supports Basketball and Lungevity!

Last Friday, 6 January, Wheatley’s CARE Club (Cancer Awareness, Research and Education) came to the Wheatley Boys Basketball game against East Rockaway. Although the Wildcats emerged victorious in a thrilling double overtime game, a highlight of the game was the presence of Wheatley’s CARE Club in support of the Lungevity organization, a nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for lung cancer.

At the start of the game, the CARE Club officers read the following statement to the supportive crowd:

Lung cancer is currently the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the U.S. An estimated 158,000 people are expeted to die this year from lung cancer. To prevent this, we are tyring to raise money to be donated to an organization called Lungevity.

The Lungevity Foundation is firmly committed to making an immediate impact on increasing quality of life and survivorship of people with lung cancer. It does this by accelerating research into early detection and creating more effective treatments, as well as providing community support and education for all those affected by the disease.

Student sold pizza, baked goods and shirts throughout the game. They also held a half-court shot contest and raffle.

Thanks to the support of all of the students, as well as CARE Club advisors Dawn Muscarnera and Christine Cambria. Thanks to Ms. Muscarnera for the photos!
