Athletics Signing Day for the Class of 2022!

On Wednesday, friends, family and coaches gathered together to recognize and celebrate the Wheatley student-athletes who have committed to pursuing athletics in college. Mr. Scaturro provided a write-up of these remarkable members of the Class of 2022.

Jaime Behar 

Jaime Behar has been a standout Varsity Girls Soccer and Varsity Girls Lacrosse student-athlete since her freshman year.  In her first season on the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team, she made 124 saves which equated to a 55.4% save average, and she was awarded the Conference V Unsung Hero Award.  During her junior year, she made 145 saves while maintaining a 52.9% save average.  This past year she made 131 saves for a 57.2% save average.  She has been awarded the Under Armour Long Island All American two times and was named as an Under Armour All American Watchlist Finalist in 2022.  Jaime was named to the Newsday Top 100 Players to Watch list this past spring. 

Jaime will continue her academic and athletic career at  East Carolina University where she has committed to the Women’s Lacrosse program. 

Jordyn Behar 

Jordyn has been a standout Varsity Girls Soccer and Varsity Girls Lacrosse student-athlete since her freshman year.  During her rookie campaign, Jordyn led Nassau County in points scoring 60 goals and 63 assists for 123 points.  During her junior year, she tallied 66 goals and 43 assists for 109 points which also led Nassau County.  This spring, Jordyn had 51 goals and 12 assists for 63 points.  She has amassed 295 career points in her 3-year career.  Jordyn was also named to the Newsday Top 100 Players to Watch list. 

Jordyn will continue her academic and athletic career at Arizona State University where she has committed to the Women’s Lacrosse program. 

Alexis Burke 

Lexi has been a 4-year starter on the Varsity Girls Soccer team.  She has been a team captain for the past 2 years.  Lexi was named to the Newsday Top 100 Players to Watch list.  She was awarded All-Conference in 2018 and All-County in 2019-2021.  Lexi was named as the Nassau County Class B Playoff MVP in both 2018 and 2021.  Her efforts have led the Wildcats to 3 Nassau County Class B Championships, 2 Long Island Class B Championships, and 2 NYSPHSAA Final Four appearances.  This past year Lexi was recognized as First Team All-State by the New York Sportswriters Association. 

Lexi will continue her academic and athletic career at SUNY Cortland where she has committed to the Women’s Soccer program. 

Colin Delay

Colin Delay has been a standout on our Varsity Boys Lacrosse team since his freshman year.  He is a two-way midfielder and also plays attack for our boy’s lacrosse program.  As a freshman, Colin tallied 25 goals and 10 assists.  As a junior, he helped take Wheatley/ Carle Place Boys Lacrosse program to a 7th seed in Class C, which was the highest seed in the history of the program.  Colin scored 26 goals and 10 assists. He was also named All-County Honorable Mention last season.  In his senior year he currently has 39 goals and 4 assists as we just finished the regular season last night. 

Colin will continue his academic and athletic career at Binghamton University where he committed to the Men’s Lacrosse program.

Charlotte Iannone 

Charlotte has been playing soccer since she was four years old and started training to be a goalkeeper when she was eight years old.  Charlotte has played for ECNL and DA teams since seventh grade and currently plays for the East Meadow 2004 Barcelona ECNL team. In 2019, she won the Michael Rizzo Memorial Award for Outstanding Dedication to Goalkeeping. In 2021, she was named a member of the ECNL New England U19 All-Conference Second Team.

Charlotte will continue her academic and athletic career at Bowdoin College where she committed to the Women’s Soccer program. 

Jacob Meirowitz

Jacob Meirowitz has been a standout Varsity Baseball student-athlete since his freshman year.  He has been a 2-year captain and was named to the Newsday Top 100 Baseball players to watch on Long Island in 2021 and 2022.  Jacob is an excellent centerfielder with a strong arm and a big bat.  So far, this year Jacob is batting .327 with 17 hits including 2 home runs with 15 runs and 17 RBIs.  Last year, he played a pivotal role in the Nassau County and Long Island Conference 6 Championship.  He was also named to the Axcess Baseball Preseason Honorable Mention List.  Jacob had led the team to the Nassau County Class B Semifinals which are taking place this week. 

Jacob will continue his academic and athletic career at Muhlenberg College where he committed to the Baseball program.

James O’Connell 

Jimmy has been a 3-year starter on the Varsity Boys Basketball team.  Jimmy has been recognized as a 2-time All-County recipient.  This past winter he was named to the Newsday Top 100 Boys Basketball Player to Watch list.  Also this past winter, due to Jimmy’s stellar performances he was named Conference B/C Player of the Year and named as 4th Team All-State by the New York State Sportswriters Association while averaging 21.5 points per game best for 4th in Nassau County and 10th on Long Island.  He was named to the Newsday All-Long Island 2nd team. 

Jimmy will continue his academic and athletic career at SUNY Maritime where he has committed to the Men’s Basketball program. 

Julia Schriefer

Julia has been a 5-year member of our Varsity Cross Country and both Winter and Spring Track and Field teams.  During this time she has established herself as one of, if not the top, runners to come through The Wheatley School.  In 8th and 9th grade, she competed at spring track states in the 400m hurdles, 800, 1500, and 4×800.  Julia competed in the Cross Country State Championships in 10th and 12th grade, finishing 6th place in 2021 earning All-State and All Federation honors.  She competed at the Winter Track and Field State Championships in 2019 and 2021, earning All-State and All Federation honors in the 1000m and 1500m.  She competed at the prestigious Millrose Games and New Balance Nationals for the mile and 4x800m relay this past winter.  Julia currently holds school records in the 200m, 300m, 400m, 600m, 800m, 1000m, 1500m, mile and relays.  She was named the Female Distance Runner of the Year in Section 8 for Cross Country and Winter Track.  She is a two-time Nassau County Champion in Cross Country and three-time Nassau County Champion in three winter and spring events.  She was named to the Newsday Top 25 Runners to Watch for Cross Country and Winter and Spring Track.  She was also named Newsday Nassau Runner of the Year for Cross Country this past fall. 

Julia will continue her academic and athletic career at Brown University where she committed to the Cross Country and Track and Field programs. 

Kavin Shukla 

Kavin has been a member of the Varsity Boys Tennis team for two years during his time at Wheatley.  As a senior, he has a record of 12-2 while playing 1st singles.  Kavin was named as a captain of the team which just recently was crowned Conference 2A Champions.  This is the first team tennis championship in 10 years for the Varsity Boys Tennis team.  Kavin will lead the team into the Small School Playoffs this week as well as participate in the Nassau County Championships this weekend at Eisenhower Park. 

Kavin will continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Rochester where he has committed to the Men’s Tennis program.
