On a Historic Day for Wheatley Cross Country, the Boys and Girls Teams Both Capture Nassau County Championship Crowns!

On Saturday, 30 October, the Wheatley Cross Country teams showed up at Bethpage State Park ready to challenge the other schools in the Nassau County Cross Country Championship meet.

The heavy rain in the morning and the hundreds of runners further impacting the course meant that this would not be a day for personal best times.

Boys Varsity Race

The Boys Varsity race kicked off at 1:00 pm. Unfortunately, a fall as he turned the corner in the final 150 meters caused senior Scott Schmuck to lose the lead and precious seconds. Nevertheless, Scott wound up as the Nassau County Class III runner-up. Rounding out the scoring for the Wildcats were seniors Declan Brady (5th place), Patrick Barrera (10th place), Bryan Schmuck (11th place) and Lucas Schmuck (48th place). These results enabled the Wildcats to earn the Nassau County Class III Championship, beating runner-up Seaford by 21 points!

Also competing for the boys were: Yan Jun Lin, Jacob Ferraro, Jordan Fitoussi and Maahir Kasliwal.

Girls Varsity Race

The Girls Varsity race kicked off at 1:20 pm. Senior Julia Schriefer dominated the field, repeating as Nassau County Class III Champion! Congratulations to Julia! Rounding out the scoring for the team were: Emmie Keys (4th place), Caitlin O’Keefe (7th place), Shannon Flachner (8th place) and Nayiri Barton (16th place). These results enabled the Wildcats to earn the Nassau County Class III Championship, beating runner-up North Shore by 19 points! Not only was this the first County Championship for the girls, but it broke North Shore’s 15-year streak of county championships!

Also competing for the girls were Angela Testani, Ella Zhong, Alyssa Bhagan, Lauren Shin and Eleni Daskalakis.

Congratulations to both teams for their amazing work. A special thanks to Coach DJ Paulson who has done so much to build an inclusive, supportive and competitive program for all of our student-athletes!
