On 26 February 2021, students representing the editorial staff of The Wheatley Wildcat attended a virtual Press Day at Adelphi University. This annual event is an opportunity for High School students to learn more about journalism. This event culminates with the Quill awards, awarded for outstanding work in the field by High School newspaper journalists.
Over the years,The Wildcat has been recognized with many Quill Awards. This year has been particularly challenging, however, due to the nature of student clubs and activities during these COVID-19 times (they are all virtual).
Adelphi began this year’s event with a presentation about keeping stories local and the impact that COVID-19 has had on student journalists and their ability to develop, investigate and publish timely newspaper articles. The students then went to virtual breakout sessions to discuss how the news and the structure of a school setting impacts their own reporting. The highlight of the day was the presentation of the Quill Awards, featuring nine categories (each school may enter up to six categories).
We are pleased to share the following recognitions earned by the Wildcat editors and reporters:
- Most Outstanding Reporter (2nd place): Huda Ayaz, Editor- in-Chief
- Best Sports Story or Column (2nd place): Emma Melnikov
- Best Opinion Piece, Column or Editorial (3rd place): Alaina Pinto
Congratulations to the recognized students and to all the staff of the Wildcat. Thanks as well to the Faculty Advisors, Andrew Ardito and Jo Beth Roberts, for their work with the students. You can read The Wildcat online at https://wheatleywildcat.org/
