On Friday, 8 January and Saturday, 9 January, ten students from The Wheatley School attended the Long Island Leaders of Tomorrow Conference presented by ERASE Racism. The conference was held virtually.
Participants connected with over 150 students from across Long Island to discuss and learn about the issues of structural and institutional racism and hear directly from the program’s student council. This included sessions on racial divisions in housing and education on Long Island that still exist today. Conference participants also discussed strategies for increasing student understanding of contemporary racial divisions, including the brainstorming of lesson plan ideas for all grade levels. Our student representatives will reconvene in the coming weeks to explore possibilities on how to further spread awareness of these important issues.
Student participants included:
- Delilah Belmont
- Colleen Giunta
- Garima Jain
- Yan Jun Lin
- Kate Seo
- Astha Singh
- Divya Singh
- Leah Varghese
- Kayla Vos
Thank you to Mr. Wayne Jensen, Director of Social Studies and Real World Learning, for overseeing our participation in the conference! [Thanks to Mr. Jensen for the write-up and screen grab, too!]
