The final recognition given during our Academic Awards Evening is The Wheatley Medal. Presented by the Wheatley Principal, the Wheatley Medal seeks to highlight a senior boy and girl who have exemplified the highest standards of scholarship, ethical conduct and service to school and community.
Here is what was said during the presentation of this year’s medalists, Jacob Gilbert and Lianna Golden:
Our first distinguished recipient has proven himself to be a genuine, charismatic and compassionate leader. Excelling in almost everything he chooses to do, this student has used his singular determination and drive to almost single-handedly help others achieve success. Bright and articulate, he is thoughtful beyond his years. His teachers rave about his contributions to classroom discussions and the breadth and depth of his intellect.
In Wheatley, this recipient has served in leadership roles in countless clubs and activities, including Yearbook, Student Government and Mock Trial. As much as he has impacted and impressed our school community over the years, this recipient has also made a mark on our larger community. He is the founder and CEO of a charitable foundation and has devoted countless hours to informing and educating people within this capacity.
A remarkable student, he is kind, compassionate, intelligent, talented, driven and well rounded. The Class of 2017 has been fortunate to have his leadership, and our school is a better place because of his presence. Although it might not produce the same tears in his eyes as earning the Showdown Trophy, please join me in congratulating Jakob Gilbert as one of this year’s recipients of The Wheatley Medal!
The next recipient of the Wheatley Medal has developed into a natural, fearless leader. Never one to sit back, she has shown great initiative and determination to make her school and community a better place for all. We have all benefitted from her many talents and her willingness to give of herself.
Academically, she has challenged herself and achieved wonderful success, with glowing words of praise for her intelligence, work ethic and commitment to her studies. Within the school, she has engaged in and led so many of our extracurricular activities, including Varsity Revue, Theatre and Mock Trial. A gifted musician, we have benefitted from her musical talents for many years. She has also dazzled us with her performances on the stage. She has also impressed us with her leadership skills, for hers is a leadership with a purpose; not simply to gather “titles,” but rather to make a difference through her effort and follow-through.
It is her commitment to the community at large where her compassion for those in need truly shines. She has raised thousands of dollars for charity and has committed herself to countless acts of kindness to individuals in need. This is who she is: thoughtful, compassionate, sincere and humble.
Please join me in one more Golden moment as we congratulate the second recipient of the Wheatley Medal, Lianna Golden.
