The Wheatley Athletic Program is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Brianna O’Brien. Brianna recently signed a letter of commitment to compete in cross country and track and field for the University of Connecticut in the American Athletic Conference.
Brianna, a senior captain for the Wildcats, has been honored by the Nassau County and New York State Cross Country Coaches and the Nassau County and New York State Girls Track Coaches Associations. Brianna has been named All-State (2016) finishing second at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C Cross Country Championship meet, All-County (2016) winning the Nassau County Class C Cross Country Championship and the overall fastest time in Nassau County. Brianna’s record setting year earned her Newsday’s Nassau County Female Cross Country Runner of the Year Award. Brianna’s race times qualified her to compete at the National level, culminating her cross country season with a 15th place finish at the Footlocker Cross Country Regionals in Van Cortlandt Park. This accomplishment is more noteworthy as this was the first-year Brianna competed in cross country. As a sophomore and junior Brianna was a starter on the Nassau County Class B County Championship soccer team earning All-Conference soccer recognition as a junior.
Brianna competed in Winter Track earning All-County recognition in the 3000 meters (2016 and 2015) and All-Conference in the 1500 meters (2016, 2015 and 2014). Again, Brianna’s outstanding performances qualified her for National level competition with a 1st place finish in the emerging elite 3000 meters in Greensboro, North Carolina as a junior and, as a senior, a 4th place time in the nation at the Armory in Manhattan. With the final chapter of Brianna’s storied high school career coming to a climatic conclusion this spring, we can hope that Brianna will add to her past successes – All-State 3000 meters (2015-6), All-County 3000 meters and 1500 meters (2015-6).
The recognition of her accomplishments is well deserved and validated by Brianna’s performance on the cross country trails and track. Brianna has made a commitment to her academics and athletics. Brianna’s contributions have strengthened our program and made them very competitive. She continues to be a fine example of sportsmanship, academics and athletic ability for all of our younger student-athletes to emulate. Brianna will graduate Wheatley as the most accomplished female distance runner of all time.
In April, Brianna signed her National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Connecticut to compete in Division I Cross Country and Track and Field. Her academic scholarship and athletic prowess will allow Brianna to continue her pursuit of excellence.
