Yesterday, 30 November, over 150 students, including 40 Wheatley students, participated in the 34th Annual SWS Mock Trial at Wheatley. Participants from Roslyn, Baldwin, Manhasset, Great Neck North, North Shore, Kellenberg, Syosett and Glen Cove spent the day at Wheatley competing in a tournament that serves as a tune up before the start of the New York State Mock Trial tournament.
SWS believes that this tradition is so beneficial. Wheatley had three full teams comprised of Mock Trial Club members and SWS students. Students prepare either the prosecution or defense side and serve as either attorneys or witnesses. No matter what the role, students get to feel the pressure of performance in a safe and nurturing environment.
The day could not be such a success without the support of the East Williston school board and the Wheatley administration. Additionally, volunteer lawyers give up their day to judge and provide feedback to participants. Our volunteers included Mr. Martin Meaney, Ms. Lisa Golden, Mr. Steven Barnwell, Mr. Albert Khafif and Mr. Bob Greco. Additionally, Wheatley’s own Dr. John Staudt and Ms. Theryn Gibbons also donned robes for the day.
