This past Wednesday, Wheatley’s AP Environmental Science students visited the Fire Island National Seashore at Sailor’s Haven. Led by our AP Environmetal Science teachers James Abdale and Steve Finkelstein (and accompanied by our Science Research Coordinator, Alexis Blondrage), students began their visit seining on the bay-side of the island to study some of the aquatic species that inhabit the area. The student then learned about local geology and ecology on a guided hike led by park ranger. Traversing a cross section of the barrier island, the classes explored the beach, dunes, swale, and the Sunken Forest (one of only two such forests on Earth).
Thanks to Mr. Abdale for the write-up of the trip. Thanks to Mr. Abdale and Tessa Karikas for the photos!
