The final recognition given during our Academic Awards Night is The Wheatley Medal. Presented by the Wheatley Principal, the Wheatley Medal seeks to highlight a senior boy and girl who have exemplified the highest standards of scholarship, ethical conduct and service to school and community.
Here is what was said during the presentation of this year’s medalists:
The first recipient of the Wheatley Medal is simply not of this planet! “How does she do what she does,” is a question that is inevitably asked by those who see her in action! With a perfect transcript in the most demanding courses we offer, this recipient’s intellectual abilities are unquestioned. Her teachers praise her classroom engagement and relish the commitment she has demonstrated both inside and outside of the classroom. Fiercely intelligent, she possesses an inner drive that helps her to excel in all areas.
A three-season athlete, a talented musician, an active member and leader in multiple clubs, this student’s proverbial plate is always full. Nevertheless, she has a natural ability to manage her time well, meet all deadlines and excel in all work – all with grace and aplomb.
Most importantly, she is one of the most genuine, thoughtful and kind students Wheatley has ever seen. Her commitment to the underdog, her desire to create connections across all cultures and lifestyles, and her deep concern for the welfare of others has not only connected her to so many of her classmates, but it has made Wheatley a better place for all of us.
We have been so fortunate to have her at Wheatley for these past five years. Please join me in congratulating the first Wheatley Medal recipient, Krista Chen.
The Wheatley School has been blessed by the talent and generosity of this next recipient in so many diverse ways. Academically, he has enriched his life and those around him by always striving for perfection – no matter what the challenge. A gifted, hardworking student, his perfect transcript speaks to a commitment to his studies and an ability to excel across all disciplines.
Academic achievement does not sufficiently describe this young man’s place within our community. A leader in our school he is one of the students who can connect with anyone. He is the type of young man who seeks to right a wrong. He cares deeply about his community and takes positive steps towards reaching out to those in need. He does these things to make a difference, not to receive accolades. In spite of all of his incredible talents, he is one of the most humble and genuine students one will ever meet. And then there are those incredible dance moves!
Even more remarkable is the fact that this young man does all these things with a smile on his face. He never appears flustered, he is always kind, and he is quick to lend a hand to a classmate in need. You will not get flashiness or bravado with him. Rather, you will get one of the most honest, thoughtful and capable students who have graced Wheatley’s hallways.
Although he has received countless accolades during his years at Wheatley, none seem more appropriate than this final one tonight. Please join me in congratulating the next recipient of the Wheatley Medal: Andrew Zuckerman.
