On Tuesday evening, April 5th, The Wheatley School hosted the second of the East Williston School District’s Multicultural Dinners, this one highlighting the cultures of Southeast Asia. The evening was the outgrowth of the district’s Multicultural Committee, which looked to create opportunity for the adult members of the community to learn more about each other over good food and conversation. On this evening, over 200 community members and district staff attended the event where they watched a traditional dance performed by Wheatley students, learned about the colorful springd Holi Festival, experienced delicious cuisine and danced as if it were a wedding!
World Language and Multicultural Committee Chairperson, Joan Anderson, commented that the district schools do so much to foster greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures. These evening activities, however, are intended to bring the adults of the community together to learn more about each other.
This was truly a wonderful evening, filled with conversation and laughs! Friendships were made that evening. So many in attendance commented on how many similarities exist among the different cultures.
These cultural opportunities have been funded through the generosity of community members. The district plans to hold two dinners next year, focusing on other cultures represented within the district.
