Last week, from Thursday through Sunday, Patrick Clarke and Birthe Seferian were at the National Council of the Social Studies annual conference in New Orleans. In addition to learning about some of the newest aspects of social studies education (e.g., C3 Framework, performance-based assessments), Mr. Clarke and Ms. Seferian gave a break-out session on Wheatley’s School Within A School (SWS).
Their presentation, Wheatley’s School Within a School: A Democratic Program at 40, was well received by attendees. They shared materials with several teachers and administrators who were hoping to model programs of their own on our SWS model. People were very excited by the fact that SWS provides students with so many opportunities to voice their opinions and control their own education. The student leadership and student choice components were the most intriguing aspects of the program for many of the participants.
We are fortunate to have some of our talented faculty members able to present at a national conference!
