Sarah Golden and Morgan Hanel, two of the Wheatley students enjoying time in Peru this week, sent the following dispatch about Day 2!
Our second day in Lima, Peru was absolutely amazing! We woke up bright and early to visit the school, El Colegio San José de Monterrico. The students and teachers welcomed us very warmly with signs and kisses! We were all given individual schedules and sat in various classes such as math, science and English as well. The students were so excited…we were treated like celebrities!
We had a delicious Peruvian meal and broke up into groups to play sports during recess. Afterwards, we divided up into cultural activities. Half learned how to play the Peruvian drum “el cajón” and the other half learned a typical Peruvian dance and danced to the music played by their classmates. The students were of all ages ranging from 10-16 and were so accepting and eager to learn more about our culture. It was an incredible experience to speak to kids our age half-way around the world. The school was very prepared and generous with gifts. We feel very lucky to have had such an experience, we didn’t want to leave!
Although saying goodbye was very difficult, we are excited about our trip to Cuzco on a 9:00 am flight tomorrow morning. We will see our new friends again on Sunday when some join us for dinner. Can’t wait for the rest of the week! You’ll be hearing from us soon!
