Wheatley 8th grader, Cecilia Jozef, was awarded third place earlier this year in the annual Italian Poetry Contest held on March 20th at SUNY Old Westbury. Cecilia was recognized for her recitation of “Lo Sconosciuto“ by Aldo Palazzeschi. This event is sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian. Wheatley’s Italian teacher Susan Vasselman stated, “I am very proud of the students who participated in this event. It is a wonderful experience. Our students meet students from all over Long Island who study Italian and compete in poem recitations.”
Students are rated on their interpretation of the poem, poise, pronunciation and intonation. Joan Anderson, Chairperson of the Foreign Language Department in the East Williston School District, added, “Our Italian program is always well represented with so many of our students participating. We are so proud of the public recognition they have received.”
Other participants from The Wheatley School included: Eva Suppa, Raffaela Palmieri, Alana Osroff, Julia Dioguardi, Jade Marcus, Francis Cappi, and Michael LaGinestra.
