The art of writing is a difficult one for many students. Despite minds that are exposed to countless stimuli, students often struggle with writing topics. To help students sharpen their writing skills, Ms. Bartscherer designed an in-class writing activity that required students to circulate among four different art “galleries” and select a painting or drawing about which to write for seven minutes. Students were asked to place themselves in the artwork and write from that perspective. This activity was repeated four times on four separate sheets of paper. At the end of the activity, each student was asked to select his or her best work as the writing that would be expanded to a longer piece.
